SLE Events = Community Involvement
The purpose of our organization is to encourage and promote Latina/o youth to graduate high school with intentions of pursuing a college degree, to eliminate the borders that prevent them from socially, politically, and academically progressing. SLE has hosted a number of events that informed a myriad of people about culture, art, and activism of the Latina/o community in the United States. Education is the prominent reason for the SLE organization which has led us to implement Sigueme Shadow day and ¡Si, Se Puede! Youth conference among many others. We actively speak out on political and social issues that deeply impact the Latina/o community both on and off campus.

Welcome Dinner
The Annual Welcome Dinner is SLE's first official event of the year. It is organized
with the goal of welcoming to UGA the recently admitted Latino community. Besides sharing
a delicious meal, the freshmen have the opportunity of meeting influential people on campus
and looking at the resources that the university and Athens have to offer. It is a great
way to start networking and getting to know SLE!

Dia De Los Muertos
El Dia de los Muertos (The Day of the Dead) is a traditional Mexican holiday.
The festivities occurs on the 1st and 2nd days of Novemeber. Traditions include
building private altars honoring the deceased, and using sugar skulls, marigolds,
and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed. Here at UGA, SLE celebrates
El Dia de los Muertos by building "altares" similar to the beautiful,
detailed traditional ones of Mexico. In these altars we pay tribute to people who
have recently died for noble causes or who were victims of havoc (i.e.American
soldiers, the women of Ciudad Juarez, the victims of the Peruvian earthquake, etc).

¡Sigueme!
Sigueme is a one-day event that focuses on bringing Latino high school juniors and
seniors from surrounding counties to the UGA campus to shadow UGA students. Each
Sigueme participant, based on their interests, is matched up with a current UGA
student. Sigueme participants will attend classes, eat at the dinning halls, and
take part of a campus tour and admissions workshop. They will be provided with
informational packets that include HSF information as well as admission materials. In
the fall semester of 2007 the program hosted 80 students and became the largest group in SLE
history. The event meets it's goals of providing real life experience of college
life to the Latino youth in a very direct and passionate manner.

¡Si, Se Puede!
¡Si, Se Puede! is a one-day conference targeted to rising ninth to twelve grade
students that are interested in learning about higher education and being active
in their communities. The conference was named ¡Si, Se Puede! in honor of Cesar
Chavez's works as a human rights activist. The ¡Si, Se Puede conference consists
of workshops where students interact and learn about a variety of subjects: US Latino
culture, art, and activism, as well as benefits of graduating from high school and
pursuing a post-secondary education. UGA representatives and speakers from organizations
are invited to speak with the students. Lastly, the youth conference provides high school
students with vital information via resource fair, where they can learn about other
organizations that will aid them when applying for college and scholarships.
